STREETSTYLE TRENDS AT FASHION WEEKS FOR SS22

GO BIG OR STAY HOME

Seems after so long staring at one’s wardrobe, wishing the world would reopen and provide reason to throw on our most dressiest dress, the chance to hit the front row again was huge – and literally translated into the looks that spilled the streets around the SS22 showcases.

And we get it: Fashion Week is the place fashion lovers come to reveal themselves and be really seen by their peers – not a time to play small, and especially not when the excitement for a return to normalcy’s been sky high.

Voluminous dresses – some ball gown in nature – were the perfect way to express the mood for the style set’s return to Fashion Week: a big deal, a long time coming, and a moment that for some even warranted daytime sequins.

Of course, if anyone was going to deliver the ‘roaring ’20s’ spirit the post-pandemic promised, it would be the fashion crowd.

BACK TO BUSINESS

Another way to forget the struggles of a house-coat-bound two years? Dressing as though it never happened; jumping straight back into the swing of things in the industry with a no fuss, ‘as we were’ attitude.

Distinctly sleek, some guests opted for no frills, all kill, largely tailored looks that reasserted they’re in the business of getting dressed. From suits to blazer-dresses and long fashion editor-esque coats, smartwear ruled the sidewalk and showed whose wardrobe’s still boss.

Join them by borrowing from Onloan’s collection of designer suits, these AW-ready coats or anything from Onloan’s ‘Back to Work’ edit here.

SEXUAL HEALING

Looks like these years of being kept inside (or, without a catwalk to sit beside) has left a lot of fashion’s people feeling frisky – so much so, that the streets were paved with corsets, bralets, spaghetti straps and pieces held together with buckles.

From dominatrix leather to y2k belly tops and stringy, sheer fabric, the stylish are bringing sexy back. Unleash your kinky side with a loan of this vinyl dress by Kitri, or go vegan with leather from Designers, Remix or Mykke Hofmann, and be a part of the It crowd, doing it outside.

I'LL MAKE IT OUTSIDE

Whether born through the countless hours spent finding retro gems on Depop and Ebay, admiring handmade creations on Etsy, or scrolling through the DIY designer Tiktoks that popped up over the lockdowns, punk spirit and ‘make it your own’ has returned to style; a Y2k-meets-grunge-fused take on “oh this? It’s thrifted/up-cycled/customised/loaned.”

There were badges, plaid tennis skirts, platform boots, warped prints and tie-dye, statement eyelets, leather and a lot of bootcut. Everything ‘thrown together’ in feel, and accessorised with a nonchalant confidence that the outcome totally works.

To do it yourself? Loan from Stine Goya’s recent collection ‘Grunge Euphoria’ to jump straight in without the commitment.
