AUTUMN STYLE INSPIRATION VIA THE MOVIES

FAR FROM HEAVEN, 2002

Not seen this classic American period drama, starring Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, and Patricia Clarkson? Don’t worry – all you need to know is its colour palette.

1950s suburban housewife, Cathy absolutely cleans up style-wise, wearing enough reds, oranges and browns to compete with the movie’s backdrop of changing trees. For a similar effect, try to out-Autumn Autumn by wearing all its hues.

TWIN PEAKS, 1992

Twin Peaks is great for all sorts of reasons, but let’s concentrate: Tailoring, plaids, checks and mannish trousers reign supreme in this fictional Washington town. When the weather’s taking a turn mid-September, this is the wardrobe you want.

Fuss-free, texture-rich with classic ‘back to school’ vibes, this wardrobe is ready for just about anything… save for whatever David Lynch is planning, of course. There is no uniform for that.

PRACTICAL MAGIC, 1998

Arguably the best part of the Autumn, wardrobe-wise? Halloween. Which is where Practical Magic treads lightly. If you haven’t seen this 90s rom-com, know it stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as witchy sisters, who have both magic and style in their blood.

We’re talking cardigans, slip skirts and sweater vests – all cosy and highly wearable as you transition from Summer to Autumn, or from good to bad witch this season.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, 1989

Of course, no Autumn movie list is complete without the 80s American rom-com, When Harry Met Sally. And no wardrobe could be complete without Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal’s impressive set of knitwear.

If you haven’t seen it, engross yourself in this classic movie immediately, and take inspiration from the equally classic outerwear, knitwear, menswear-inspired trousers, and the general androgynous layering Meg’s character Sally shows off throughout.
